66 Years of Music Ministry at Tried Stone Missionary
Honoring a legacy that began in July 1960 as the Tried Stone Junior Choir.
The Tried Stone Adult Choir will celebrate 66 years of music ministry with its annual anniversary concert, Gospel Soul in Motion ’26, on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at 4 p.m. at Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church, 100 Carroll Avenue in Asheville.
Under the direction of J. Cornell Proctor, Minister of Music, the anniversary concert continues a cherished tradition that has inspired generations through gospel music, praise, and worship. Rooted in a legacy that began in July 1960 as the Tried Stone Junior Choir, the ministry has grown through the decades, from the Tried Stone Young Adult Choir to today’s Tried Stone Adult Choir, remaining a vital part of the church’s worship experience and the Asheville community.
Gospel Soul in Motion revives a beloved tradition that dates back to the 1960s, when choirs from across WNC gathered at Tried Stone to fellowship through song. Those memorable anniversary concerts became known for their spirited choir marches and dynamic presentations, with the late Elder John R. Hayes serving as one of the event’s most beloved emcees.
This year’s celebration promises an unforgettable afternoon of worship featuring special guests Peculiar People, under the direction of Stephen J. Blount and Terry P. Letman. The afternoon will begin with an inspiring Praise & Worship experience led by Elder Carluse Baird & One Voice, accompanied by the Found Nation Band, setting the atmosphere for an evening of heartfelt praise and powerful gospel music.
The Tried Stone Adult Choir invites the community, friends of the ministry, and former choir members to return home for this historic celebration as the choir reflects on 66 years of faithfulness, musical excellence, and ministry through song. Attendees can expect an uplifting worship experience filled with traditional and contemporary gospel music, joyful fellowship, and a celebration of God’s enduring faithfulness.
