Governor Stein Makes Judicial Appointment

Former 28th Judicial Chief Judge J. Calvin Hill has been appointed Emergency District Court Judge for the State of North Carolina.

Judge J. Calvin Hill, who retired in 2023, will now preside over emergency, conflict, and special judicial cases in all 100 counties in the state, bringing his expertise to the bench statewide.

Judge Hill began his legal career with CC “Buddy” Malone’s Law Firm in Durham after earning his law degree and license to practice in 1994. While vacationing in the WNC mountains, he decided to moved to Asheville, where he joined the District Attorney’s 40th Prosecutorial District Office as a public defender for Buncombe County. In 2007, Attorney Hill was appointed as District Court Judge by former North Catalina Governor Mike Easley.

After working as a practicing attorney and District Judge, Hill was appointed Chief Judge of the 28th Judicial District in 2009, a position he held for 14 years until his retirement.

The citizens of western North Carolina, along with The Urban News, congratulate Judge J. Calvin Hill on his new appointment. We are certain he will continue his long career of dispensing Equal Justice Under the Law.
