A Different World Reboot
Netflix’s A Different World has been renewed for a sophomore season.
They are living their best young, gifted, Black, talented lives!
A revival of the iconic NBC sitcom of the same name, the series follows a new generation of students at Hillman College, centering on Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the youngest daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert.
The Season 2 logline reads “After transformative summers, Deborah and her Hillman classmates return to campus for sophomore year with a ‘New Year, New Me’ attitude only to find themselves faced with past decisions and uncertain futures. New loves and friendships, and deeper questions of purpose … all while, of course, getting themselves into a whole lot of new mess.”
The reboot was critically acclaimed by Variety, which said of the first season: “Timely and fresh, the new series distinguishes itself from the original while paying homage to everything that made its predecessor so iconic.”
Singer Jill Scott revealed that she’s been an independent artist since 2007 in a recent interview with the House Guest Podcast, and how much of a fight it was to gain freedom from her former label, Hidden Beach Recordings. That freedom cost Scott and cost her greatly.
House Guest Podcast
Jill Scott talks about the best night of her life.
“I left and got sued for $19 million,” Scott told Evans. She says the number was grossly inflated relative to the money the label earned from her projects.
“Who had $19 million? I was like, you made $19 million off of me?”
In 2010, Hidden Beach alleged Scott didn’t fulfill her contractual obligations and sued when she wanted to leave the label. She countersued, claiming that the label didn’t support her enough.
The son of actress Halle Berry is at the center of a tense legal dispute between the actress and her ex-husband Olivier Martinez. The former couple’s 12-year-old son, Maceo, is reportedly the subject of abuse allegations that led a Los Angeles County judge to grant Martinez a temporary restraining order against Berry recently.
According to Us Weekly, Martinez filed for a domestic violence restraining order on Thursday, October 1, alleging that an incident took place between Berry and their son on September 26. Martinez claimed Maceo called him asking to be picked up from Berry’s home because she allegedly “physically attacked him and choked him.”
Halle Berry v. Olivier Martinez Custody Fight
Son Maceo wants to testify.
Olivier claims their 13-year-old son, Maceo, wants to ‘speak with the court’ himself at the Oct. 16 hearing to tell his side of the story. Olivier claims Maceo took a photo of Halle looking visibly upset moments after an alleged choking incident, which prompted the legal proceedings. Halle denies all allegations of abuse and filed her own response, arguing the photo shows her ‘standing calmly,’ and calling out that no photos corroborate Maceo being injured or evidence of strangulation. Halle is ‘vehemently against’ Maceo testifying in court, claiming his testimony would be influenced by coaching and manipulation and could ‘force him to choose sides in a conflict he is not emotionally equipped to navigate.’ Halle asks the court to reinstate their 50/50 custody schedule.
“While on the phone with our son, I heard him panicking and heard Berry still yelling at him in the background,” Martinez alleged in the filing. He claimed that when he arrived to pick up Maceo, Berry “did not come out of the home,” but her partner reportedly helped carry the boy’s bags to the car. Martinez also claimed Berry texted him the next morning to apologize for what happened.
In the filing, Martinez asked for a temporary “no contact” order in place of the former couple’s standard 50-50 arrangement, along with a psychological evaluation and substance abuse screening.
