In recognition of Mount Zion Community Development Inc.’s Project NAF Program
The Project NAF (Nurturing Asheville & Area Families) program is “Truly Essential.” A legacy for over 25 years, the first program by an African American led 501 (c) (3) non-profit redevelopment corporation provides case management, advocacy, and preventive education to Black/ African American pregnant and postpartum women.
The program is Buncombe County’s first initiative for services to Black/African American to impact healthy birth outcomes, low birth weight, and premature births. This program has served pregnant and postpartum women for 25+ years.
Project NAF has been showcased and highlighted as a National Model aimed at eliminating gaps in health-care availability, quality, and affordability based on race, gender, age, income, geographical and other differences. Led by the US Bureau of Primary Health Care, the 48-state exchange encompasses 180 sites and 6,000 participants. Project NAF was also chosen as a Community Program Model by the NC Child Fatality Task Force.
