Citizens to Issue Citations for Parking Violations

The City of Asheville Parking Services Division and the Asheville Police Department will again be training volunteers to administer tickets for handicapped parking violations.

The APD’s Crime Prevention Unit trains the volunteers according to N.C. General Statue 20-37.6, which covers Handicapped Parking regulations.

Volunteers will learn how to issue parking citations and will receive instruction on pertinent laws and ordinances and how to identify appropriate handicapped placards and plates.

“The program will
not only help alleviate parking problems for the disabled, but also
increase awareness that parking spaces for handicapped people are
simply not appropriate places for just anyone to park,” said James Lee,
Asheville’s parking enforcement supervisor.

Program
training takes about three and a half hours and those who pass will get
approval from the city manager to be issued official citation books.
Applications are available at the Parking Service’s office at 45 Wall
St. in downtown Asheville and must be received by the close of business
on September 19.

Volunteers
must not have a criminal record or any outstanding parking violations.
Training for those accepted into the program will meet at 9 a.m. on
September 27 at 29 Haywood St.
