Making Our Dreams a Reality

America’s tangled web of race, trauma, and memory.

Eddie S. Glaude, Jr. bears witness to the difficult truth of racism’s continued grip on the national soul.

The popular author explores the tangled web of race, trauma, and memory, presenting powerful ideas of what we must ask of ourselves in order to call forth a new America.

Eddie S. Glaude, Jr. challenges us to confront our history and envision a better future.

Racial habits shape our perceptions and inform our fears, and those fears then justify policy. The problem is the gap between our ideals and our practices. Those habits inform how we talked about race relations in this country. The problem is that we don’t live up to our ideals.

We live in a country founded on a “value gap” — with white lives valued more than others — that still distorts our politics today. Only by remaking democracy from the ground up can we create real change.

Eddie S. Glaude Jr. is the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor at Princeton University and author of Democracy in Black: How Race Still Enslaves the American Soul, We Are the Leaders We Have Been Looking For, and Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own.
