Cherokee Indian Fair
This year, the fair will also serve as a hub for helping those affected by the storm.
Important Message from Principal Chief Michell Hicks
As we prepare for the 112th Cherokee Indian Fair this week, we do so with a deep understanding of the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in areas surrounding the Qualia Boundary.
Many of our friends and neighbors are still recovering, and we know there may be questions about why we are moving forward. For our community, the fair has always been a time to gather, to reconnect, and to strengthen our bonds.
In these difficult times, when many have been without cellphone service or Wi-Fi, it is more important than ever for us to come together. This fair offers a chance for our people to support one another and lean on the strength of our community. We know that not everyone will be able to attend, and we respect that.
Safety remains our top priority, and we strongly urge everyone, especially those in surrounding areas, to follow NCDOT recommendations and adhere to any travel restrictions. If it’s safe for you to join us, we welcome you, but we do not want anyone to put themselves at risk.
This year, the fair will also serve as a hub for helping those affected by the storm. We will be collecting food and water donations at the entrance, which will be distributed to the communities hit hardest by Hurricane Helene. This is what Gadugi is about — lifting each other up and working together in times of need.
We will be requesting volunteers from the community and Tribal employees to assist with food distribution to our neighbors in the upcoming days and weeks. We will work with our employees to provide administrative leave while assisting surrounding communities with these efforts.
We understand there may be concerns, but this fair provides a much-needed opportunity for reconnection and community strength. We can honor our traditions while supporting those who need it most.
We look forward to seeing you if it is safe for you to attend, and we will continue to focus on helping our friends and neighbors recover from this storm. Stay safe, and remember, we are all in this together.
