Surgeon Trained in Asheville Returns to Join Mission Hospital
Dr. Marc Duverseau rejoins community that helped shape his career.

A surgeon who completed part of his medical training in Asheville has returned to western North Carolina to care for patients at Mission Hospital.
Marc O. Duverseau, MD, FACS, a board-certified general surgeon whose clinical focus includes hernia, colon and general surgery, has joined the hospital’s surgical team.
Dr. Duverseau completed general surgery training locally at the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) and at Mayo Clinic. He returns to Asheville after serving as a general surgeon at NMC Health Medical Center in Kansas.
“Coming back to Asheville is meaningful to me because this is a community that played an important role in my training as a surgeon,” said Dr. Duverseau. “I’m looking forward to putting down roots here again and caring for patients throughout Western North Carolina.”
In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Duverseau has contributed to surgical research and medical education throughout his career. His work has included research in gastrointestinal, vascular and critical-care surgery, with studies presented or published in surgical literature. His commitment to caring for others began well before his surgical career. Originally from Haiti, Dr. Duverseau volunteered there before medical school, assisting physicians and nurses, including in the aftermath of the devastating 2010 earthquake.
That background also contributes to how he connects with patients today. Dr. Duverseau is fluent in English, French and Haitian Creole and proficient in Spanish, allowing him to communicate directly with patients from a variety of backgrounds.
Dr. Duverseau is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
Outside the hospital, he enjoys traveling with his family, watching movies, playing video games, and cooking and baking.
