by Errington C. Thompson, MD –
Okay, readers, let’s play a game.
I will write a question and your job is to figure out if the phrase is fact or fiction.
Question 1 – Did President Donald Trump, while at the G7 conference (the world’s major industrialized nations—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States) say that he received a call from China and that China wanted to negotiate their way out of the trade tariffs?
This is fact. Trump said this. Unfortunately, China didn’t call. Trump had made up this mysterious call in order to stabilize the Wall Street markets. So, I will ask you which is worse—a president who simply makes stuff up or a president who makes stuff up to move the markets?
Personally, I’m torn. It is like being punched in the face by a young Mike Tyson or a young Mohammed Ali. Either scenario is bad.
Question 2 – Did President Trump’s recently fired personal secretary, Madeleine Westerhout, say that Trump liked her better than his daughter Tiffany because Tiffany was too fat and ugly? I know it is hard to imagine this presidency being any worse. Every day there is something that really makes your stomach turn.
This statement is true. Mr. Twitter-in-chief then took to Twitter to tell everyone that he loved his daughter, Tiffany. Of course, we always believe whatever the president tweets about because he is always so honest and trustworthy. (See question 1)
Question 3 – In response to the more recent mass shooting in Odessa, Texas, did Texas Republican Representative Matt Schaefer take to Twitter to say, “I am NOT going to use the evil acts of a handful of people to diminish the God-given rights of my fellow Texans. Period. None of these so-called gun-control solutions will work to stop a person with evil intent.”
For some reason there are Republicans who believe that somewhere in the Bible, in the book of Exodus, maybe, if I’m not mistaken, there is the commandment Thou Shalt Own an Assault Rifle.
I have read the Bible. I haven’t found such a passage. I have found a message of love and respect for our fellow man. I did read the part about Thou shalt not kill, which seems to be the opposite of everyone having the right to own a firearm.
As a nation we have worked to make sure that no American can get his/her hands on nuclear material to make an atomic bomb. We also can’t buy a bazooka at WalMart because in the wrong hands a nuclear bomb or bazooka can cause a lot of damage.
I have no idea why having an assault rifle is okay. Any weapon that fires more than eight to ten bullets in less than ten seconds should be taken off the street. If we as a nation need to buy them back from Americans, then that’s what we need to do.
These weapons need to be taken off the market. We must end gun violence in our country. A 17-month-old toddler was shot during the latest rampage. One law is not going to fix the problem. We need a series of laws. Mental health is NOT the only answer. Every country in the world has crazy people, yet it is only in America where crazy people can kill five to 20 people with an AR-15.
Oh, the answer is yes. Rep. Schaefer did post that statement to his Twitter account.
Question 4 – During a briefing on Hurricane Dorian, did President Trump say, “I’m not sure I’ve even heard of a Category 5, I knew it existed. And I’ve seen some Category 4s.”
Again, the answer is yes, he did.President Trump is 73 years old. Without using the power of Google, Trump should have known that Hurricane Camille in 1969 was a Category 5 hurricane and devastated the Mississippi coast. Hurricane Andrew blew through the Bahamas and battered southern Florida before gaining strength in the gulf (I almost typed, got its second wind. I refrained.) and slamming into Louisiana. Andrew was also a Category 5. Maybe our president cannot remember all the way back to 1992.
But we have had four Category 5 hurricanes in the last four years. Matthew, Maria, Irma, and Michael were all Category 5 hurricanes at one time during their life span. Then again, Trump is somewhat of a self-centered man. He would remember if one of those hurricanes hit one of his resort properties. Otherwise it appears to all be a blank to him.
Question 5 – Did Trump say that he wanted construction to speed up on his “wall” so it would be completed before the 2020 election? Did Trump go on to say that he didn’t care if any laws were broken in the process of completing the wall because he would pardon the guilty parties? Of course he did.
Question 6 – Did Trump say, “In light of a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine which clearly showed a link between air pollution and an increase in cardiovascular and respiratory deaths, I’m going to order the EPA to increase air pollution standards.”
Trump did not say this. This is false. But that study is true. The study looked at over 600 cities across the globe. The authors did find an increase in deaths when pollution increased. Trump’s EPA is actually weakening standards for methane emissions. So I wonder if Trump is going to hand out gas masks for us to wear.
Senator Gillibrand has dropped out of the presidential race. I’m not sure how I feel about her dropping out. Rumor has it that many Democrats were mad about her vocal stance against former Senator Al Franken and feel she helped force him to resign.
I liked Franken. I thought he was a smart and thoughtful senator but he was a grope-a-tologist. He molested women. If we are truly Democrats/progressives then we believe that women have the right of independence. Men or other women, for that matter, can only squeeze and rub when given permission. Gillibrand didn’t make up that rule. She just helped enforce it against a powerful, likable senator. I personally would like to thank her for standing for what is right.
Unfortunately, her campaign was … nothing. I know of nothing that she did to stand out from the crowd of 20. If you want to stand out, you have to do more than show up for these debates. I’m sorry Kristen did not get traction. To be honest, no one is really getting any traction. Everyone appears to be stuck in the mud.
Back on Track
It is time to put America back on track. We must stop the lies. We must expel lairs. We must reject easy and simple solutions. Our problems are hard. If there were easy solutions, then we would have implemented them years ago.
We need to protect our environment. We need to protect our workers from being overworked and underpaid. We need to upgrade our schools so that, teachers, students and parents enjoy the experience. We must lift up students who excel and we need to encourage students who struggle. No more gerrymandering. We need America to be the envy of the world. Let’s work together to put America back on track.
