The Future of Our Vision Board

The Conscious Corner by Maceo Z. Keeling, Sr. –
Like other moments in our history, 2020 has been riddled with joy and pain.
We have seen the battles for equity, democracy, and freedom; the continuing fight for a cleaner world; food destroyed while our brothers and sisters starve and die in America. We have seen people drink toxic water while we continue to pollute our streams, rivers, and oceans. We have seen people rise up in protest in support for the rights of others, and injustices put on notice for the world to see.
In retrospect, given the challenges of 2020, will you put family photos on your vision board of gatherings like the ones you used to have, anticipating a return to what you feel was, or is, normal?
Perhaps your vision board will have a theme on health and fitness, with pictures of rippled six-pack abdominals and well-muscled legs. Or, maybe you’ll get a little nip and tuck on body parts that will invariably age—just as you ultimately will leave and return to dust?
Or will you put up a photo of a Bentley, Ferrari, or perhaps a Gulf Stream Jet? These are beautiful and desirable luxuries, no doubt—but can you drive them on the roadway to a unknown destination that we all must meet?
In my travels I’ve witnessed unspeakable beauty on this earth. The Naplali Coastline of the Hawaiian Islands; the fall foliage of Massachusetts and the North Carolina mountains; the Upper Navua River on Viti Levu, Fiji; and the incomparable Grand Canyon. These are nature’s gifts of an inexplicable, indescribably beautiful realm.
My vision glasses will have frames that allow me to see the challenges of others; they’ll hold bigger, clearer lenses so I can get a view from another person’s perspective.
The lenses will give me the vision of things I haven’t seen before in myself and others and, I hope, the focus to really adjust my behavior in a way that add joy instead of chaos. They will help me see and be aware of the dangers around me, but to see the beauty that is also everywhere. Ideally, those lenses will give me the clarity of sight to see my way though and to see that I have already made it through.
Yes, my lenses will make me better able to see my blessing and to see that I am still here! The vision to see that when I am called to step into the fray, to vote, to fight, to love, to pray, to speak up, to speak out, to be responsible and accountable, that my response should be, can and will be, “Here I am!”
Yes, I think my vision board will have a pair of glasses on it.
So, what will be on your vision board for 2021?
