AKA Day of Service

By Sarah Williams –

Area members of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first African American Greek letter sorority, donated their time in January to addressing one of their target areas of concern, Women’s Healthcare and Wellness.

Because of the large number of women in the Asheville area who are homeless and lack the resources to purchase essential feminine hygiene items, the sorors of Alpha Kappa Alpha packaged and donated 1,200 feminine products to women in a local homeless shelter.

Individuals and organizations often volunteer their time to feed the homeless, and/or donate clothes and even shampoo and makeup; however, few donate feminine hygiene products. The members who participated in this project felt that it was an enjoyable, worthwhile, and sisterly activity.
