The YMI Cultural Center Board of Directors Names Dewana Little Interim Director.

The Board of Directors of the historic YMI Cultural Center has appointed community activist Dewana Little to serve as Interim Director of the 125-year-old organization. Founded in 1893, the YMICC is thought to be the oldest African American Cultural Center in the nation, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Little, an Asheville native, is the founder of Positive Changes Youth Ministries, which takes local students on tours of colleges and universities, in particular Historically Black Colleges and Universities. She is employed as Marketing and Administrative Associate for Self Help Credit Union.

Prior to that position Little spent four years at Asheville GreenWorks as the Water Quality Educator and Community Engagement Coordinator, where she oversaw the Youth Environmental Leadership Program, a paid internship for low-wealth youth. An avid environmentalist herself, she helped implement recycling programs in five Asheville public housing developments and has served as co-chair of the board for Green Opportunities.

The YMI seated its new board in January, 2018, primarily comprising local community leaders who have advocated for change and equity across the WNC community. The YMI Cultural Center is located at 39 S. Market Street in uptown Asheville, in the heart of the Block, Asheville’s historic African American business district.
