Sweet Honey In The Rock Takes the Stage in Bravo’s 2006-2007 Season

Grammy award winning African American female a cappella and percussion ensemble, Sweet Honey in the Rock, will perform on Sunday, February 11, 2007 at 4 p.m.

Founded in 1973 and dedicated to the discovery, dissemination and celebration of the best a cappella vocal music from around the globe, Sweet Honey in the Rock, is composed of 5 powerful female vocalists accompanied by a signer.

This
ensemble performs breathtaking excursions into harmony singing in the
middle and lower registers. Their music is deeply rooted in the sacred
music of black church-spirituals, hymns, gospel as well as jazz and
blues. Their style mimics West African polyphonic singing, creating an
ever increasing arabesque of harmony and rhythm that is rich, energetic
and extremely intense.

With their
extensive discography and national and international touring
experience, the women who comprise Sweet Honey are more than
entertainers. They are a sextet of artists dedicated to preserving and
celebrating African American culture and singing traditions. They are
poets and activists who cannot remain silent on the most pressing
contemporary issues.

From the
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “Imagine seven of the most beautiful,
diversely talented, highly intellectual, socially aware,
justice-seeking, creative women you ever have met in one room. Imagine
they share their stories of life: the essence of love and loss, the joy
of anticipation and the sorrow of disappointment. They share their hope
for the future: yours, mine, and ours. Imagine. They open their mouths,
and then, incredibly, they sing some of the most beautiful music you’ve
ever heard. That is Sweet Honey in the Rock.”
