The Honorable Congressman Elijah Cummings a notable advocate for all people died early Thursday morning after lingering health challenges at Gilchrist Hospice Care, a Johns Hopkins affiliate in Baltimore. He was 68.
Elijah Cummings obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Howard University, serving as Student Government President, and graduating Phi Beta Kappa. Cummings went on to graduate from the University Of Maryland School Of Law. Cummings also received 13 honorary doctoral degrees from Universities throughout the nation.
Congressman Cummings represented Maryland’s 7th Congressional District for 23 years and chaired the House Oversight and Reform Committee where he was a key figure in the impeachment inquiry of Mr. Trump. He also led multiple investigations of the president’s governmental dealings, including several in 2019 relating to the president’s family members serving in the White House.
Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, the chairperson of the Maryland Democratic Party and Cummings’ wife, said in a statement that Cummings was “an honorable man who proudly served his district and the nation with dignity, integrity, compassion and humility. I loved him deeply and will miss him dearly.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ordered the flags at Capitol Hill to be flown at half-staff in Congressman Cummings memory. The White House, too, lowered its flag.
