More than forty young, male, African American high-school seniors recently gathered on the campus of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College as Gamma Upsilon Boulé Chapter of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity presented its annual “Recognition of Academic Achievement” awards.

The ceremony is a centerpiece of the fraternity’s continued effort to share with the community the intention of young African American men to better prepare themselves for the future.

Archon Larry McCallum, Ed.D, chair of the Gamma Upsilon Boulé Social Action Committee opened with a humorous greeting. Seated (L-R): Archon John Parham, MD; Dennis King, Ed.D., President of A-B Tech; and Archon Don Locke, Ed.D. Photo: Renato Rotolo, Urban News.

Larry McCallum, Ed.D, Chair of the fraternity’s Gamma Upsilon Boulé Social Action Committee, said, “This group of young men are all college-bound. Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity has a major initiative to assist and support African American students, especially young males. Gamma Upsilon Boulé recognizes that our nation is missing out on the contributions of a large pool of bright, talented, and academically promising students.”

At the event, AB-Tech President Dennis King presented three scholarships to the community college to deserving young men. He was joined by representatives of Asheville City and Buncombe County school systems. Representatives from Western Carolina University, Warren Wilson College, UNC Asheville, and Mars Hill University also attended, along with Asheville and Buncombe County governmental officials.

About Sigma Pi Phi – Gamma Upsilon Boulé of Asheville

Nearly a one-half century ago, Archons and physicians John P. Holt, Sr. and Otis B. Michael, both members of Beta Delta Boulé of Charlotte, suggested establishing a charter in Asheville. With overwhelming support from Beta Delta, the Southeast Region, and the Grand Boulé, Gamma Upsilon Boulé was set apart on June 27, 1987, with Otis B. Michael, MD as its first Sire Archon.

Presently, Gamma Upsilon Boulé of Asheville and its member Boulé are mentoring young men throughout Buncombe County. Members are also active in local, state, and national government involvement. These distinguished and discriminating men do not fundraise; they support their own causes, and give many scholarships through their Boulé Foundation.
