Mary C. Jenkins Community & Cultural Center Hosts 2026 Juneteenth Celebration

A weekend of freedom, history, and community.

Come out to see this mural honoring Loretta Mary Aiken, better known as “Moms” Mabley, in Brevard, NC.

The Juneteenth weekend at the Mary C. Jenkins Community & Cultural Center is a time when people come together to honor freedom, remember the past, and celebrate the strength of a community that has carried its stories forward with courage.

From June 19–21, 2026, neighbors, families, and friends are invited to gather for three days filled with history, culture, music, worship, and shared joy.

Friday, June 19, 2026

The celebration opens on Friday with a focus on storytelling and historical reflection.

Historical Trolley Tour — 2 p.m.
The first of several guided tours exploring the resilience and survival of the African American community in Transylvania County. This one-hour guided trolley tour highlights the resilience, strength, and survival of the African American Community.

Guest Speaker Dr. Dionne Hoskins-Brown — 4 p.m. at MCJCCC
This special presentation offers an evening of learning, fellowship, and community connection, followed by a Seafood Dinner.

Saturday, June 20, 2026

Saturday’s events offer a full afternoon of entertainment and activities for all ages from 12–6 p.m. at Silversteen Memorial Playground.

Take a one-hour guided trolley tour.

Live Music, Food Trucks, Duck Derby, Fun & Games
A lively community gathering with food, performances, and family activities.

Historical Trolley Tour — 1 p.m. & 4 p.m.
Tours depart from the MCJCCC Lower Parking Lot.

Adama Dembele African Drum Circle — 2 p.m.
A rhythmic, high‑energy cultural experience.

John R. Hayes High Steppin’ Dance Team — 3 p.m.
A showcase of precision, artistry, and tradition.

Bingo — 4 p.m.
A classic community favorite to round out the afternoon.

Sunday, June 21, 2026

The weekend concludes with a day of spiritual reflection and shared community.

Joint Worship Service — 11 a.m.
The community comes together in gratitude and celebration at the Mary C. Jenkins Community & Cultural Center, followed by Sunday Dinner.

African American Historical Trolley Tour
A signature feature of the weekend, offering a moving journey through local history. Experience the rich history of the African American community in Transylvania County. Hear powerful stories of the past while visiting historic sites from the post-Emancipation era.

  • June 19: Tour at 2 p.m.
  • June 20: Tours at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
