“Race in Black Mountain: Then and Now” is the topic of the Friday, April 30 public forum scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Lakeview Center Clubhouse. News anchor Darcel Grimes of WLOS-TV will moderate the discussion, following brief presentations by four prominent local leaders: O.L. Sherrill, retired high school principal; Joan Brown, member of the Board of Alderrmen; Carlos Showers, member of the Board of Aldermen; and Jane Hancock, past board member, Building Bridges of Asheville.

The event is part of a nationwide awareness day, Stand Against
Racism, sponsored by the YWCA USA and locally by the YWCA of Asheville.
Organizers in Black Mountain hope the program will result in dialogues
among people of different races in our community.

Sponsors are being recruited among churches and civic groups.
There is no charge for sponsorship. The only requirements are that the
church or organization allow its name to appear on flyers to be
distributed around town and that the group encourage its members to
participate in the forum and follow-up activities.
