Asheville City Council recently voted to expand “Middle Housing” options across our city.

By relaxing zoning restrictions, property owners now have a powerful new pathway to build long.term financial security and generational wealth.

By transforming single-family land into a multi-unit asset, property owners may have the opportunity to unlock long-term financial security by use of family owned properties.

What does this mean for you? Lots previously limited to a single home can now potentially host multiple units, such as a duplex or an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) up to 1,000 square feet, which significantly boosts underlying property value.

Living in the main house while renting out an ADU can generate steady income to offset your mortgage, taxes, and insurance. Beyond cash flow, an ADU offers comfortable, private space for aging parents or adult children, keeping family equity intact. The city has also made it easier to legally convert existing structures into compliant units.

Keep in mind that specific city requirements, lot sizes, and setbacks still apply, so this ruling won’t fit every property automatically.

Curious if your lot, or a home you are eyeing, qualifies as a candidate? Contact the City of Asheville Planning Department, or feel free to reach out to me directly—I would be happy to point you in the right direction!
