How to Identify AI-Generated Content

AI-generated content is often uniform and factual.

You can often identify text written by AI because it won’t include personal opinions, is dry, lacks emotion, is written in a matter-of-fact tone, and tends to be a bit formal.

AI also utilizes the same common phrases over and over. Watch for sentences that begin and end the same way. You may also notice a lack of depth, perspective, critical interpretation, or complexity. Ultimately, AI-generated text fails to engage the reader on a deeper level.

Because AI-generated text tends to use distinctive statistical and stylistic patterns not always obvious to us, it can be detected, of course, by AI detection apps. These apps can be pretty accurate, but mistakes are inevitable.

Since AI is trained on regular articles written by average folks, some text written by a person may look as though it was generated by AI. That’s why you shouldn’t be too quick to claim that a paper was written by AI. Run multiple checks, look for patterns, and search online to identify phrases.
