MHU Theatre Arts Department Presents Dearly Departed

Award-winning New York City director and actor Reginald Wilson.

Directed by the award-winning NYC director and actor Reginald Wilson.

Dearly Departed, written by David Bottrell and Jessie Jones, is a fast moving play that takes place in the backwoods of the Bible Belt. The beleaguered Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious.

Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father’s funeral, the Turpins’ other problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion. Amidst the chaos, the Turpins turn for comfort to their friends and neighbors, an eccentric community of misfits who just manage to pull together and help each other through their hours of need, and finally, the funeral.

Performances take place Thursday through Saturday, November 15-17, 2018, at 7:30 p.m., with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday, November 18. The production will feature director talkbacks after each performance; an opening night reception before the production on Thursday, November 15; and a diversity improv workshop at 12 noon on Sunday, November 18. Extra events are included with ticket purchases for that day’s performance.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students with student identification, and free for Mars Hill University students and staff. For more information, please contact the Owen Theatre box office at (828) 689-1389.

Following Dearly Departed, the next production from the Mars Hill University Theatre Arts Department will be Western North Carolina’s premier of the new musical version of Disney’s Freaky Friday, February 21-24, 2019. Auditions for Freaky Friday will be held November 26, 2018 at 7 p.m. at Owen Theatre. Auditions are open to people within the university or community at large.
