Seven Things North Carolina College Students Should Know Before the November 2026 Midterm Election

College students across North Carolina will have an opportunity to participate in the 2026 midterm election, but students who are voting for the first time should know the rules, deadlines, and options before heading to the polls.

The 2026 general election is Tuesday, November 3, with early voting beginning October 15 in North Carolina. Here are seven things every eligible college student should know before casting a ballot.

Get Ready: Election Day Is Tuesday, November 3

Election Day for the 2026 North Carolina general election is Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Voters who are in line by 7:30 p.m. are allowed to vote.

Students voting on Election Day must go to their assigned polling place.

You Can Register Where You Attend College

College students may register to vote in the NC county where they live while attending school. Students may choose either their college community or their former home, depending on their circumstances and where they intend to live after graduation. However, a voter may register in only one or the other location, and of course vote only once in each election.

Check Your Registration Before You Vote

Don’t assume you are registered simply because you registered in the past. Students who have moved, changed their name, or changed addresses should check their voter registration before Election Day. It is essential that you check your registration this month, and check it again in October before you vote.

The regular voter-registration deadline for the November election is 5 p.m. Friday, October 9, 2026.

Early Voting May Be the Easiest Option for Students

North Carolina’s early-voting period runs from Thursday, October 15, through 3 p.m. Saturday, October 31, 2026.

During early voting, students can vote at any designated early-voting site in their county, rather than being limited to their assigned Election Day polling place.

Early voting also provides an important option for students who discover they are not registered. Eligible voters can register and vote at the same early-voting site through same-day registration. Students registering this way must provide proof of residence. A document from a college or university showing the student’s current name and residential address may be used as proof of residence. Students must also have an acceptable photo ID.

Bring an Acceptable Photo ID

North Carolina voters are required to show an acceptable photo ID when voting in person.

Students should know that some college and university student IDs are approved for voting. The State Board of Elections has approved student IDs from numerous North Carolina colleges and universities for the 2025-26 election cycle, including schools throughout the UNC System and other institutions.

Students should check the current list of approved IDs before going to the polls. A North Carolina driver’s license, state identification card, and US passport are among other acceptable forms of identification. Students Away from Campus Can Vote by Mail

Registered North Carolina voters can request an absentee-by-mail ballot. This can be especially useful for students who are away from their usual residence or will not be able to vote in person. The US Postal Service mail is exceptionally slow lately, so please take into consideration how long it will take for you to get your ballot, and the travel time for the ballot to be returned back to your respective board of elections office—after the ballot is voted.

It may be wise to travel back to your home county to vote, or, if you choose to vote by mail, to have a close relative (see Absentee Voting and Vote by Mail)  pick up your voted ballot (sealed and witnessed in its envelope), and take it by hand to your home county’s Board of Elections office.

For the November 2026 election, the deadline to request an absentee ballot is 5 p.m. Tuesday, October 20. Students who choose this option should request their ballot early enough to receive, complete, and return it on time.

Know Where and When You Will Vote

Before Election Day, students should confirm their registration, polling place, and voting options. A change in residence can affect where a student is registered and where that student must vote.
