Walk with Opal Lee in a Show of Unity for Freedom
Commemorate and celebrate the 5th anniversary of Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday.

While we celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary, we recognize that July 4th freed the land, but Juneteenth freed the people.
At 99 years old, Dr. Opal Lee is still determined to see the Juneteenth national holiday be a reflective point of the year where we ask, “Are we free yet?” Because, as she puts it, “None of us are free if we’re not all free.”
This year, there are six walks happening across the country to promote unity, truth in history, and our freedom to vote. Opal plans to participate in the Fort Worth Legacy Walk, led by her great-granddaughter, Robyn, while riding alongside with her son.
Even though Opal is known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth because she began the walking campaign in 2016, she needs you to continue walking to keep the focus on the changes that are needed, because there is still so much work to do.
Walk in support of African American heritage, cultural diversity, and the ongoing journey of racial healing and understanding. If you are unable to join a physical walk, then join the virtual challenge by walking wherever you are and posting about it on social media.
Opal writes, “I’m so proud of the young people for continuing the work of celebrating Juneteenth. If you haven’t signed our online petition yet, please do so. I would love to get it to 3 million people showing the power of Juneteenth to represent freedom for everyone. Remember, we are stronger together.”
