Feeling the Filipino Pride

Singer H.E.R. is bringing Filipino folklore to theaters in Forgotten Island, an animated film produced by Dreamworks.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film centers around a story with deep Filipino roots, culture, and mythology, and follows best friends Jo and Rassa. The duo find themselves trapped on a mystical island called Nakali. The only way out and the only way home comes with a high cost. They may have to give up the memories that define their bond and friendship.

Forgotten Island

Hollywood’s first Filipino-centric animated feature.

For H.E.R., the role is personal. She connects the film to stories she’s heard growing up from her Filipina mother. The Grammy and Oscar award-winning artist describes the movie as a way to share a piece of her childhood to a global audience.

Catch Forgotten Island in theaters in September.

Singer Brandy is opening up for the first time about her long-rumored relationship with Boyz II Men’s Wanya Morris. In her new memoir Phases, Brandy confirms the rumors. However, what she once believed to be love is something she now sees differently, writing that she was “too young to recognize that she was being used,” according to excerpts obtained by various outlets.

The “I Wanna Be Down” singer explains that their relationship began professionally with Morris as a “mentor.” Over time, however, their connection deepened. Morris began calling and checking in on her frequently. After the “Brokenhearted” video, Brandy noticed that there was an “unspoken energy” between them.

“What had begun as admiration had transformed into something else,” Brandy writes, per Entertainment Weekly. “It seems to me that he weaponized my admiration, shaped my friendship into dependence, my respect into desire. I felt swept up in a current I couldn’t control.”
