Last September: Stories of Resilience

Videos detail the lives and stories of the towns and people affected by Hurricane Helene.

More than 100,000 homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed when Hurricane Helene swept through western North Carolina on September 27, 2024.

Multiple days of heavy rains preceded Helene, leaving the ground extremely saturated.

Streams and creeks turned into raging rivers, obliterating everything in their path. Wind gusts, reaching 80 miles per hour in places, ripped through the forests leaving acres of trees on the ground.

First responders and citizens were trapped. With all means of communication down, residents leapt into action to clear roads and assist others needing help.

Today, with many roads repaved, bridges rebuilt, and numerous homes repaired, Western North Carolinians are rebuilding together.
