Asheville Transit’s Free Fare Puts People on the Buses

Since Asheville launched free bus service two weeks ago, ridership has increased an average of 65 percent across the entire system. According to transit officials, riders from all areas of the city are taking advantage of free transit to the tune of an additional 2,300 trips per day.

“Ridership is up significantly on the Black Mountain and Weaverville routes as well as on routes serving Montford to the north, Shiloh to the south, Oakley to the east and West Asheville,” said Bruce Black, who manages the city’s transit system. “People are also trying the six new evening routes – each evening route has doubled its ridership since free service began.”

Based
on percentage increases, the system’s Weaverville route has seen the
greatest increase at 353 percent. The next two highest increases
include the Black Mountain route at 185 percent and route 3 serving
UNCA on Friday and Saturday nights at 87 percent.

There is still
plenty of time to take advantage of free bus service transit: free
transit on all routes continues through Nov. 11.
