The Gamma Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, celebrated Founders’ Day on Sunday, March 20 at the Glade Creek Baptist Church in Pisgah Forest. The chapter is headquartered in Asheville, but has members from throughout the area.

Glade Creek Baptist Church, under the pastoralship of David Suber, was the perfect place for the members of Gamma Gamma Omega Chapter to celebrate its 108th Founders’ Day. Chapter members joined the Glade Creek Baptist Church family in a spiritual worship celebration.

Immediately following the worship service, chapter members and friends adjourned to the church’s fellowship hall to enjoy a delicious meal, which was catered by Daddy D’s Restaurant in Hendersonville. The hall had been transformed into a beautiful pink and green oasis to reflect the sorority’s colors. On this 108th celebration, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members took a moment to look back at our past and to look forward with great anticipation to a bright future filled with numerous accomplishments as we carry the torch of leadership and sisterhood passed to us by our founders.

This concluded a memorable Founder’s Day observance that held as its national theme, “Launching New Dimensions of Service.”

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority , Inc., is the first Greek-lettered sorority established and incorporated by African American college women. The sorority was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, DC. It has grown from 16 young women to more than 290,000 college-trained women in more than 900 chapters in the United States, West Africa, Bahamas, US Virgin Islands, Germany, South Korea, Liberia, Japan, Canada, and the Middle East.

Since its founding over a century ago, Alpha Kappa Alpha’s mission has been to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, promote unity and friendship among college women, study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, maintain a progressive interest in college life, and ultimately be of Service to all Mankind.
