Federal Disaster Teams Arrive in Asheville

A plane full of food and water has arrived.

Army National Guard units from Greenville, SC; Greensboro, NC; and Maryland.

FEMA officials say 25 trailer-loads of meals and 60 trailers-loads of water have been delivered to the state, and a plane full of food and water has arrived at an operating base in Asheville.

Starlink satellite systems will be deployed in each county to support communication between local officials and emergency services.

Asheville Regional Airport

Residents should not go to the airport to collect relief supplies. The airport must remain clear in order for new supplies to arrive and be offloaded. All supplies will be deployed by FEMA and others at distribution points set up throughout the region.

Commercial flights have resumed, but some airlines are not yet back to their full schedules. Passengers are advised to contact their airline for the most up-to-date flight information.

Cars parked at the airport during the storm are safe, as the parking lot was not flooded. Airport officials say they will waive parking fees for the days during the storm and this week of recovery.

Water Distribution

Drinking water will be distributed today (Tuesday) at Pack Square Park (70 Court Plaza) beginning at 9 a.m. Water will be available until 7 p.m. or when the supply runs out.

EACH PERSON MUST BRING THEIR OWN CONTAINER, NONE WILL BE PROVIDED. Limited to 2 gallons of water per person, with a maximum of 5 gallons per family. The distribution site will be walk-up only. Assistance will be available for those who cannot carry their water back to their cars. The community is encouraged to park in nearby parking decks and surface lots. Please do not park in roadways in order to avoid impeding on emergency response.

Henderson County is opening six Resource Hubs to distribute water and other supplies as they become available.

The locations are Etowah Elementary School, Rugby Middle School, East Henderson High School, North Henderson High School, Mills River Town Hall, and Fletcher Town Hall.

Cellular Service

A temporary Verizon cellular satellite trailer is located at the Family Justice Center at 35 Woodfin Street. This tower will offer an opportunity for limited cellular reception within several city blocks of where it is parked.

T-mobile has set up satellite cellular on light trucks in Asheville. These stations provide cellular voice and data, along with Wi-Fi and charging stations.

– Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center, 285 Livingston St., Asheville.

– Western North Carolina Ag Center, 1301 Fanning Bridge Road, Fletcher, NC.

City Services

City of Asheville offices and parks will be closed until further notice.

There will be no trash and recycling service in the City of Asheville until further notice.

ART Bus service remains suspended while buses are involved in relief efforts.

School Updates

Asheville City Schools will be closed indefinitely until further notice.

UNC Asheville is currently operating without electricity, running water, cell service, or internet. The University will be closed until at least Monday, October 7. Classes are suspended until at least Wednesday, October 9.
