Asheville to Host “Beyond the Shop” Mental Health Trainings

Program seeks to reduce mental health stigma among underserved groups.

The program began by equipping barbers with the skills and knowledge to become Community Mental Health Advocates.

TCP Ventures, the advisory company to The Confess Project of America (TCPA), announced that it will host its next “Beyond the Shop (BTS) Community Mental Health Advocate Training Program” from July 22-24, 2024 in Asheville.

Backed by research from Harvard University, the intensive training program equips community guardians with the skills and knowledge to reduce the stigma around mental health in historically marginalized communities.

TCP Ventures partnered with Operation Gateway, a nonprofit aimed at decreasing recidivism by addressing the social determinants of the health of returning citizens, to help bring the training to Asheville.

“We’re thrilled to bring the next series of our Beyond the Shop Community Mental Health Advocate Training Program to the vibrant city of Asheville,” said Lorenzo Lewis, co-founder of TCP Ventures. “The barbers, residents, and community leaders here in Asheville will undoubtedly play a crucial role in our mission to enhance mental health outcomes in undeserved communities.”

Mental Health Advocate Training is scheduled for July 22, followed by “Train the Trainer” sessions on July 23 and 24. Facilitation begins at 8:30 a.m. each day and will conclude by 5 p.m. The sessions will be held at 216 Asheland Avenue.

TCP Ventures will also host a networking mixer on Sunday, July 21 from 6-8 p.m. at Bear’s Smokehouse Barbecue, located at 135 Coxe Avenue in Asheville. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect, learn more about the program, and access resources to support their advocacy efforts in the community.

Additionally, TCPA has teamed up with JD Finish Line to give BTS program participants the chance to win a $250 shopping spree at the footwear retailer.

“We are committed to advancing mental health advocacy city by city,” said Lewis. “Our Asheville event brings us one step closer to achieving our global goal of reaching 120 million people. We won’t stop until that goal is achieved.”
