Celebrating Dr. King Through a Virtual Experience.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville & Buncombe County will host its 40th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration via YouTube this year. The online programs will showcase the county’s historical events such as the Candlelight Service, Peace March & Rally, and the Prayer Breakfast, for which MLK Association Founder and President Dr. Oralene Simmons will be the keynote speaker.
“This year, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we have had to pivot from our usual face-to-face celebrations in which we have come together as the ‘Beloved Community,’” said Dr. Simmons. “We are together virtually this year; however, it does not make our work, community, and fellowship any less important.”
Each year the MLK Association also recognizes community members who show outstanding qualities of leadership, compassion, and community building. The 2021 MLK Community Service Award winners are Ms. Kimberly Floyd, Mr. Joseph “J” Hackett, Ms. Tamiko Ambrose Murray, Ms. Hanan Shabazz, Mr. Robert (Rob) Thomas, and Rev. Dena Whalen.
The 40th Annual Celebration begins Friday, January 15, 2021 and will be offered to the community free of charge. Access to the daily events will be through the organization’s YouTube channel, via the organization’s website at www.mlkasheville.org. No registration is required, and the community will enjoy multiple opportunities to participate over five days along with friends and family.
