Habitat’s Women Build Program Still Going Strong After Two Decades
Continuing a movement that has spanned the past few decades.
This month Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity kicks off construction of its 21st “Women Build” House.
The mission of Women Build is to enable US and international Habitat for Humanity affiliates to recruit, educate, and nurture women to build—and advocate for—simple, decent and affordable houses in their communities. Women Build affirms that women have the capability and determination to be part of a solution to the affordable housing crisis—one family at a time.
The 21st Women Build House is located in Habitat’s Glenn Bridge neighborhood in Arden, and volunteers are needed to help build it. Volunteer opportunities are available Tuesday through Saturday, and no experience is required! Bring a friend, family member, or co-worker—or sign up solo. Long-time volunteer and supporter Julie White said about her first Women Build experience sixteen year ago, “I really enjoyed learning new skills (they were all new skills to me) within a supportive environment. The crew leaders and fellow workers were so friendly and encouraging. Working with a group of women helped me grow my confidence and skills.”
White has been a core volunteer with Asheville Habitat’s construction team for the past 11 years, and she is also a “WomBAT” (Women Build Advocacy Team). The WomBATs lead the initiative to secure volunteers and raise $55,000 in sponsorship funding to build the annual Women Build House.
In addition to volunteering, you can support Women Build at two events, “Rock the House for Women Build,” and the “Women Build Wall Raising.”
“Rock the House for Women Build” takes place Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at The Mule at Devil’s Foot Beverage. Bring your friends and family and have a great evening with live music, dancing, snacks, a cash bar, and lots of ways to support the construction of Women Build House #21.
