Billy and Mickie King celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on August 9, 2019, at a surprise party hosted by family and friends from near and far.
Billy is a native of Asheville, a graduate of Stephens-Lee High School, class of ’58, and a retiree from the State of North Carolina government. He still works part-time with his former employer when not playing golf.
Mickie is also an alumna of Stephens-Lee, class of ’65, and retired from the Magnavox Company office in Skyland, NC. She crafts one-of-a-kind personalized greeting cards, is active in community and church events, and swims regularly.
“My parents never had the wedding they wanted, so we had to do something special for them,” said their son, Ernest King. “So, we [family members] got together to plan a surprise anniversary party at the Stephens-Lee recreation center—the place where Mom says she found her true love during high school.”
During the anniversary celebration the couple were surprised by grandkids who play basketball overseas in Germany and Australia, as well as by a grandson who resides in Houston, Texas.
In addition to the 50th anniversary festivities, Mickie received 101 long-stemmed roses from family, the neighboring community members, and their pets!
“It’s really very touching to know how thoughtful our family, friends, and neighbors have been. I just THANK YOU so much,” she said with emphasis and overwhelming emotion.
“This was by far the best surprise ever! It was priceless to see my parents’ faces as they entered the room,” said Ernest.
The Kings are the proud parents of nine children, 17 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Both Billy and Mickie are members of New Mount Olive Baptist Church in Asheville, where the pastor is Joseph T. Hackett.
