NCSHP Faces Persistent Trooper Shortage Across North Carolina

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol continues to grapple with a significant staffing shortage, with nearly 300 trooper positions unfilled statewide.

The ongoing shortfall has created operational challenges, particularly in rural and mountainous regions where coverage is already stretched thin.

On average, counties across North Carolina are experiencing two to three vacant trooper positions, limiting response capacity and increasing workloads for officers currently on duty. The situation is especially pronounced in western North Carolina, where geographic terrain and lower population density can make recruitment and retention more difficult.

Public safety officials note that the shortage may impact response times, traffic enforcement, and overall highway safety efforts. In response, the agency has continued recruiting initiatives and outreach efforts aimed at attracting new candidates to the force.

Despite these efforts, officials acknowledge that filling the vacancies remains an ongoing challenge, underscoring the need for long-term strategies to strengthen staffing levels and maintain consistent statewide coverage.

Individuals interested in joining the North Carolina State Highway Patrol can apply online through the agency’s official careers page at www.ncshp.gov/ncshp/state-highway-patrol-careers where applicants can review qualifications, submit an application, and connect with recruiters.

Additional opportunities are also listed on the state’s central employment site, www.nc.gov/join-north-carolina. The hiring process typically includes background checks, physical fitness testing, medical evaluations, and training at the patrol academy in Raleigh.
