First Census of the United States
I could not resist sharing this picture of the fledgling country.
As the redistricting issues play out in the North Carolina courts in 2025, curiosity sent my computer off to find out exactly how many people we are talking about serving in this state.
As of July 1, 2024, the official estimate of the North Carolina’s population was 11,046,024, making it the ninth most populous state. But in the First Census of the United States, dated 1790 and counting the following “residents” of the fledgling country, this state was listed as the third most populous (out of 16 states).
Total number of inhabitants of the United States in 1790, exclusive of South Western and Northern territory, was 3,893,635.
The current (2025) USA population as numbered on the Population Clock (US Census Bureau) as the clock was striking midnight to introduce this year’s Halloween was 342,743,446.
