Election Protection

The freedom to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy.

It’s the freedom that protects all others. The States United Voter Protection Program is working to protect and expand voting rights by supporting the state and local leaders on the frontlines of this fight. Voters determine election outcomes, but states lead on election administration. With a specific focus on the unique tools available to governors, state attorneys general, secretaries of state, and law enforcement officials, States United promotes nonpartisan legal and policy strategies and recommendations to protect the vote and makes these resources publicly available.

We can’t let myths and lies undermine our democracy, that’s why the States United Democracy Center analyzed more than 50 of the worst bills. They found an alarming pattern of state legislative proposals to shift control over election administration away from trusted state and local officials.

Their report, Democracy Crisis in the Making, analyzed the nationwide trend of partisan state legislatures trying to seize control over election administration away from trusted expert elections officials. As of early June, there have been at least 216 bills introduced in 41 states that would interfere with election administration.

States United is working every day to combat disinformation, amplify bipartisan voices defending our democracy, and translate nuanced legal decisions and policy positions into straightforward messaging for the public. Learn more at statesuniteddemocracy.org.
