N.C. Governor Roy Cooper has re-appointed Asheville community leader Dr. Sharon Kelly West to the North Carolina Commission for Public Health, the public health rule-making body for the State.
It is authorized and directed by the General Assembly to adopt rules to protect and promote the health of the public and to adopt rules necessary to implement public health programs administered by the Division of Public Health.
The Commission for Public Health was first established by the N.C. General Assembly in 1877 as the State Board of Health. It was renamed the Commission for Health Services in 1973 and became the Commission for Public Health in 2007. The Division of Public Health functions as the staff to the Commission.
Dr. West serves as Nurse Manager of Women Veteran Services at the Charles George VA Medical Center; Bioethics and the Law adjunct faculty at Mars Hill University; and Applied Ethics adjunct faculty at Asheville-Buncombe Community College. She is a graduate of Winston Salem State University, earned her master’s degree at Western Carolina University, and received her doctorate from Albany Medical College.
Dr. West is the daughter of Edythe E. Webb and the mother of Paul, Kelly’e, and Jennifer.
