Notable Senator and War Hero John McCain Dead at 81

Senator John McCain and Vietnam war hero died Saturday, August 25, 2018 at his home in Arizona at the age of 81. Surrounded by family members upon his death, Senator John McCain leaves behind a momentous legacy for American politics and our military service personnel. The senator had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years.

Senator John McCain was a rare figure of politics who was liked and respected for his positions on government, and for who he was. It made him a popular figure nationally seen by the public as a man above politics.

McCain’s political career was intimately connected to his service in the Vietnam War. Both his father and his grandfather were naval officers, and he followed in their footsteps, graduating the US Naval Academy in 1958. He became a naval aviator, was shot down over Hanoi in 1967, and endured six years of captivity and torture before returning home in 1973.
In a memoir published in May, McCain wrote that he hated to leave the world, but had no complaints.

Said Senator John McCain of his life:

“It’s been quite a ride. I’ve known great passions, seen amazing wonders, fought in a war, and helped make peace.  I’ve lived very well and I’ve been deprived of all comforts. I’ve been as lonely as a person can be and I’ve enjoyed the company of heroes. I’ve suffered the deepest despair and experienced the highest exultation.” McCain went on to say: “I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times.”
