Senator Martin Nesbitt
Senator Martin Nesbitt

With a career of more than 40 years as an incredible public servant, Senator Martin Nesbitt was a passionate fighter for the rights of women and families, education, the environment, mental health and the poor. His leadership and determination will be greatly missed and always remembered.

Nesbitt was a strong supporter of our Democratic women in public office. He swore in Rep. Susan Fisher when she was tapped to replace his seat in the House when he moved to the Senate. Fisher recalls, “He always said that because he had been appointed to that seat his mother held until she died that he was really just keeping the seat warm for another woman and he was really glad to see me go into that seat.”

Senator Nesbitt donated funds to complete the cement finishing in the basement of the YMI Cultural Center. This was a project that was long in coming, until Senator Nesbitt became involved.

These are just a few of the countless examples of his kindness and his belief in the positive impact we can all make through public service. We are lucky to have had such a strong voice and advocate for North Carolina.
