Asheville’s 2013 Board & Commission Vacancies

Every year Asheville and Buncombe County appoint citizens to serve on boards and commissions that oversee public institutions and activities ranging from the Asheville City Board of Education to the Metropolitan Sewerage District.

The boards serve the public, and to function well and benefit the entire community, they need input from a variety of residents. By putting your name forward, you tell City Council or the County Commission that you are interested in good government and want to participate in making it work for us all.

Not everyone is chosen, of course, and sometimes a person’s name will be in the hopper for several cycles – even two or three years – before they’re considered for a seat. The process will differ depending on the particular board or commission a person wants to serve on, but in every case those who wish to be appointed have to make their wishes known. In general, you must apply at least two or three months before a seat opens up.

Upcoming openings are on the Civil Service Board (two seats expire May 21); the Housing Authority (two seats expire June 11); and the Civic Center commission (expires June 30).
