Moral Monday: Witnesses United Against an Immoral Budget

June 2, 2025 in Washington, DC.

The Poor People’s Campaign is sponsoring gatherings of faith and moral leaders at our nation’s Capitol in Washington, DC on the first Monday of every month.

As representatives of the 140 million people in this country who are living in or one $800 emergency away from poverty, we know that our families and communities will be hurt first and worst by the legislative violence being proposed and pushed thru by the Trump Administration and Republican-led Congress.

This violence includes but is not limited to the Administration’s destructive and illegal Executive Actions, the devastating proposed federal budget cuts to the social safety net, and massive cuts to the federal agencies that support and administer this safety net.

Did You Know: Congress is planning deep cuts to the social safety net including:

  • $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid which will result in 36 million poor people losing their healthcare coverage and the closure of rural medical facilities.
  • $230 billion in cuts to food stamps or SNAP which could impact over 40 million hungry families
  • The dissolution of HeadStart which provides childcare for 650,000 poor and low-income children

At the same time, Congress is proposing:

  • $4.5 trillion in tax cuts for billionaires, while requiring the poorest 20 percent of Americans to pay more in taxes
  • Hundreds of billions of dollars for increased militarization of our communities, deportations of our immigrant neighbors, and war abroad.

It doesn’t have to be this way!

We need moral witnesses to speak out against an immoral national budget. The NC Poor People’s Campaign is hosting a bus to take you to DC on Monday, June 2, 2025.

  • We demand an expanded social safety net that lifts from the bottom and allows all of us to thrive, not struggle to survive!
  • We demand a moral budget, not a death-dealing scheme!
  • We demand full and expanded democracy and voting rights!
  • We demand a Third Reconstruction!
