Minority Male Mentoring Program
by Martha Ball
A-B Tech received a $30,000 Minority Male Mentoring grant from the North Carolina Community College System Office to fund the Minority Student Leadership Academy, which fosters academic and leadership skills.
Membership in the Minority Student Leadership Academy is open to all students, but the Academy’s workshops and seminars will place special emphasis on challenges faced by minority students. The purpose of the Academy is to increase retention and graduation rates among minority students, as well as to provide leadership activities and training.
The program, now in its third year, includes workshops and seminars such as leadership development, effective test taking tips, time management, dressing for success, resume writing, job interviewing skills, health and wellness, stress management, conflict resolution, and entrepreneurship.
The Minority Student Leadership Academy was established from the pilot
program aimed at increasing graduation rates among minority male
students. Its components are:
• Academic resources
• Free tutors
• Moodle Course Shell containing academic tutorials
• Computer lab
• Study skills and test-taking strategies workshops
• Mentoring program
