Western North Carolina, what is going on?

In the last seven months, we’ve had a hurricane bring devastating floods, wildfires torching our forests, a freak hailstorm pelting downtown Asheville, and then, on Saturday, May 10, 2025, we felt earthquake tremors.

This weather is getting wild!

We all thought that Western NC was a true climate haven. No hurricanes. No flooding. No wildfires. No earthquakes. This was a stable area protected by the mountains. A place people could retreat to for peace, safety, and resilience.

And, a few years ago, the data supported it. The models all said the same thing. But things change. Storms change. Patterns shift. These changes matter.

If you felt anything—rattling dishes, a weird jolt, the floor shifting under you, please take 30 seconds and report it to the USGS. This data matters.

Did You Feel It? (DYFI) collects information from people who felt an earthquake and creates maps that show what people experienced and the extent of damage. This is how scientists track patterns and make smarter predictions. It might just help someone else down the line.

Stay safe out there, friends.
