Representatives of The Mud Creek Missionary Baptist Association, District Three, celebrated the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service by donating food, snacks, and school supplies to Asheville High School and School of Inquiry & Life Sciences at Asheville to support students. The representatives chose this initiative to help address a critical need within the area.

The Southeastern University Consortium reports that 14% of Buncombe County residents lack regular access to sufficient food for every person in a household, and “77% of eligible children qualify for and receive free and reduced-price school lunches” within our area. Many students need snacks during the school day and food on the weekend to help sustain them.

“We are delighted to share with the Asheville High School and SILSA students,” said Rev. Leslie Hines, District Developer and Pastor of Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church. “We are excited to see what the Asheville City School system is doing with the children. We also appreciate the representatives’ willingness to work with us on this project and provide us with additional ways to assist with their efforts.”

District Three presented the donations to the Asheville High School and SILSA’s Social Worker, LaVette Campbell, to distribute the items. In receiving the donation, Campbell provided the representatives with information on various departmental initiatives that she has implemented to support the students. She indicated how important the donation is to students’ success and ability to focus during class and not be distracted by being hungry.

“It means the world to our students, and our gratitude is endless,” declared Campbell.
