Far too many people, locally and around the county, find the cost of a home to be unaffordable.
Nearly half of local renters pay more than 30% of their income on rent. A tight rental market and extremely limited supply of affordable homes for sale has only increased the need for affordable housing.
Residents who are cost-burdened by housing, and who are ready to make the transition this year from renter to homeowner, are encouraged to explore Asheville Area Habitat’s homeownership programs.
Applications are now being accepted for Glenn Bridge, a new neighborhood being built in Arden that includes a mix of detached homes, two-story townhomes, and single-level Aging in Place townhomes specifically designed for adults age 55+. Applications are also being accepted for a 3-bedroom, 1.5-bath home being built in Mars Hill.

If you’re ready for an affordable monthly payment and a new energy-efficient home, now is the time to apply. Visit ashevillehabitat.org/self-evaluation to see if Habitat’s program may be right for you.
Those who are interested may request an application to be mailed to them by calling (828) 210-9371 or emailing [email protected]. Additionally, in-person and virtual information sessions are available. Dates and times of information sessions can be found at ashevillehabitat.org.

Median rent in Asheville in 2023 was $1,361 for a one-bedroom apartment and $1,537 for a 2-bedroom. An average Habitat monthly mortgage payment is $800, including property taxes and homeowner’s insurance. A Habitat mortgage is guaranteed to be affordable for the homeowner, meaning it will not consume more than 30% of the homeowner’s gross monthly income.
Asheville Habitat homes are energy efficient and GreenBuilt certified. If systems are properly maintained, heating and cooling costs should not exceed $45/month for at least the first two years.
Homeowners contribute at least 200 hours of sweat equity (volunteer service) as part of their “Willingness to Partner” agreement with Habitat. This includes helping to build their home and the homes of their neighbors, volunteering in the ReStore, and taking homeownership preparation classes like Manage Your Money and Basic Home Maintenance.
The national Habitat organization has been helping close the racial homeownership gap and expand access to stable, affordable homes since its founding in 1976, and the Asheville affiliate—the first established in North Carolina—is committed to this work. People of color make up more than 40% of Asheville Habitat’s mortgage portfolio, compared to 5% of all homeowners in our region. Habitat’s thriving, diverse neighborhoods defy the discriminatory ethos behind residential segregation, and hundreds of Habitat mortgages disprove the myths justifying “redlining” and predatory lending.
