After the cancellation of audience events in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre (SART) will return to a full summer season in 2021.
The professional theater company performs at the historic Owen Theatre on the campus of Mars Hill University. Over its 35-year history, SART has produced and premiered plays and musicals that, for the most part, portray the rich culture and heritage of Southern Appalachia.
The 2021 season will open on June 17 with The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown, a musical romance about two young New Yorkers falling in and out of love. It will be followed by First Date, a comedy about romance in New York City.
The fall will include the premiere of Gale Gooch Alexander’s Milestones, a journey of discover for an aging couple discovering their emotional roots in Southern Appalachia. The season will conclude with the world premiere of A Southern Appalachian Christmas, written by Richie Barrella with original music and arrangements by Aaron Michael Krueger, followed by A Christmas Carol, adapted from the Charles Dickens story by Dwight Chiles.
In addition to in-kind support from MHU, SART has received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, NC Arts Council, Madison County Arts Council, and the Shubert Foundation.
