Lobby Hero Examines Truth, Justice, Loyalty

Ellipsis Theater Company will produce Kenneth Lonergan’s provocative drama Lobby Hero, a look at today’s justice system, as well as tested loyalties, at 35below for three weekends in March.

When Jeff, a luckless young security guard, is drawn into a local murder investigation, loyalties are strained to the breaking point. As Jeff’s tightly wound supervisor is called to bear witness against his troubled brother, and an attractive rookie cop finds she must stand up to her seasoned partner, truth becomes elusive and justice proves costly.

William: And I am not the type of person who sympathizes with the criminal element in this kind of situation. Not at all. But the fact remains that there’s a lot of people in jail who don’t belong there, a lot of black people in jail who don’t belong there, and a lot of cops and prosecutors and what have you who would just as soon throw somebody in jail as nobody. And I hate to say it, but my brother is tailor-made for the part…

This thought-provoking drama from the Oscar winning Kenneth Lonergan dares to explore “Is it ok to lie, and to compromise your moral principles, if it means protecting your family and friends, keeping your job, and avoiding the scorn of your colleagues? Or should the truth be told, no matter what the personal cost? Does that honesty then make you a hero, or an outcast?” (DC Metro Theatre Arts). Lobby Hero will captivate you, and make you think about moral principles. It makes for a compelling night at the theater.

Lobby Hero stars Daniel Henry as Jeff, Eugene Jones as William, Devyn Villarreal as Dawn and Badi Mirheli as Bill. Devyn Villarreal directs. This is the latest production from Ellipsis Theater Company, producers of last year’s rave reviewed The Mercy Seat, as well as the year before, The Realistic Joneses, and the 2016 sold out run of David Mamet’s Oleanna.

Lobby Hero will be performed March 8-24, 2019 with performances Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.ashevilletheatre.org, over the phone at (828) 254-1320, or in person at the Asheville Community Theatre Box Office, 35 East Walnut St. in Downtown Asheville.
