The Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Asheville and Buncombe County kicked off its “Stop the Violence Campaign” at Pisgah View Apartments Community Center. In attendance were Chief William Anderson, Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan, Asheville City Councilman Jan Davis, and Assistant City Manager Paul J. Fetherston,

The campaign is the result of the recent death of Charles Keith Morgan Jr. who was gunned down June 1 in front of numerous witnesses outside a building at Livingston Apartments. No arrests have been made, and APD has publicly lamented the lack of cooperation from people who were in close proximity to the shooting. Sheriff Duncan said, “This partnership is being done because as law officers, we are here to protect our communities. We must remain vigilant and protect our citizens.”

Dr. Keith Ogden said that, “Shootings and other violence perpetrated by young black men are having a devastating impact on Asheville neighborhoods and families. People talk about snitching on criminals, but if it’s wrong, it’s wrong!”

Ministers of the IMA have made plans to intermittently ride along with local law enforcement throughout the county to help create a positive presence with community members. Chief Anderson called the partnership historic, stating that, “We need to work collaboratively to solve our community problems,” he said. “We all know that law enforcement can’t do it alone. We need the community’s help.”
