Triangle Park Mural Celebrates the Block
By Moe White
Just Folks, the local nonprofit dedicated to serving low-income families through community services and job training, will unveil a new historic mural on the walls of Triangle Park in the heart of The Block, traditionally the center of African American business and culture in Asheville.
The park is located on S. Market Street at its intersection with Sycamore Alley; the mural will be officially unveiled on Saturday, May 18 at a Block Party beginning at 1 p.m.
The mural was designed by Molly Musk of the Asheville Design Center in consultation with Just Folks members, and was painted and installed by volunteer artists from both organizations. It depicts historical images and contemporary figures from the region and includes a silkscreen of the famous YMI Jazz Band; images of the Stephens-Lee High School Bears; inspirational words from civic and political leaders and philosophers; and paintings of children, youth, and adults who have made a difference in Asheville’s history.
The unveiling celebrations will continue until 9 p.m. The party will begin at 1 p.m., and food and drinks, raffle items, and a silent auction for hand-screened mural prints will take place throughout the day. The official program and stories of the block will be shared beginning at 4 p.m., followed by a gospel performance at 5 p.m. Throughout the evening, from 5:30 to 9, there will be live entertainment and dancing.
