Without Shade, Without Rest
Documentary shares story of fight for heat protections.

Just Economics and WeCount!, in partnership with Working Films, invite community members to a free screening of Without Shade, Without Rest, a new documentary produced by Six Eye Films, an independent nonprofit based in South Florida.
The film looks at the fight to win heat protection for outdoor workers in Florida in the wake of the hottest year on record. Follow two frontline organizations, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and WeCount!, as they work to secure lasting protections for Florida’s outdoor laborers.
Since 2011, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers has built heat standards into its Fair Food Program through the Worker-driven Social Responsibility (WSR) model, which makes those standards enforceable on the ground. Now, as lawmakers move to block new regulations, other groups like WeCount! are using the same WSR approach to expand enforceable protections across the state’s fields and nurseries. Without Shade, Without Rest captures this pivotal turning point in the fight to protect outdoor workers as extreme heat intensifies.
The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion organized by local film screening host, Just Economics, an organization with a history of advancing worker justice in western North Carolina and building power with workers, tenants, bus riders, and people living on a low income.
“Immigrant labor and the challenges that migrant workers face are often invisible and absent from larger worker justice conversations,” says Vicki Meath, community organizer with Just Economics. “This film offers a look into the realities for migrant workers and the urgency of taking action to make industry-wide change.”
The Without Shade, Without Rest screening and discussion will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at the Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center in Asheville.
