Read to Succeed will host a free, family-centered celebration of Black Children’s Book Week from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 26, 2026, at the PVA Community Center, 1 Granada St. in Asheville.

The event will feature a special visit from Dr. Khalyn J. Solomon, a pediatric speech-language pathologist and author of My Superhero Aurie.

Observed annually during the final week of February, Black Children’s Book Week honors Black children, stories, and the creators who help young readers see themselves reflected in books. Solomon’s book highlights friendship, neurodiversity, and the strengths that make every child unique. Families will enjoy two live read-alouds and hear about the inspiration behind her work.

“At a time when negative representations of Black people have become all too commonplace in media, Black Children’s Book Week is a powerful celebration of Black excellence in children’s literature,” said Ashley Allen, co-executive director of Read to Succeed Asheville/Buncombe. “We’re excited to bring families together for an evening that centers joy and reminds us how positive representation shapes identity, confidence and belonging, especially for young children.”

The event also will include reading carnival games, literacy activities with prizes, face painting, a live DJ and “breakfast for dinner” featuring a cereal bar by Chill Cereal Bar.

The first 50 families will receive a free signed copy of My Superhero Aurie and additional family reading resources.
