The String Queens – Classically Trained Musicians
Music, Mission, and Message
The String Queens (TSQ)—violinist Kendall Isadore, violist Dawn Johnson, and cellist Élise Sharp—are more than a trio of classically trained musicians. They are cultural ambassadors, reshaping how audiences experience string music.
As three Black women in a historically exclusionary field, they have faced racism and bias, yet transformed those challenges into a mission: to model diversity, equity, and joy in classical performance.
TSQ have performed at Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, and the 2021 “We Are One” Presidential Inauguration Concert honoring Vice President Kamala Harris.
Their soul-stirring Christmas CD, “Our Favorite Things,” is filled with inspiration, depth, and the signature TSQ magic that makes this the perfect soundtrack for the season.

Two members of TSQ are proud alumnae of Howard University, a place that has long nurtured artists who push beyond imposed limitations. Their connection to Howard underscores their commitment to uplifting Black cultural legacy while expanding the reach of classical music. This grounding in community and history informs their artistry, making their performances not just concerts but acts of cultural storytelling.
The String Queens are not simply entertainers; they are agents of cultural change. By blending Baroque compositions with jazz, gospel, and pop, they challenge the boundaries of genre and representation. Their work resonates with audiences who see themselves reflected in their artistry, and with communities who recognize the importance of visibility in classical spaces.
